The Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) Group has issued a warning for a marine and beach threat between Port Charles and Whiritoa on the Coromandel Peninsula, including the Firth of Thames.
It follows two separate large earthquakes in the Kermadec Islands region this morning.
There is a danger to swimmers, surfers, people fishing, small boats and anyone in or near the water close to shore due to unusually strong currents and unpredictable water surges. ....

Swarm of earthquakes in Pacific - including magnitude 8.1 quake in Kermadec Islands at 8.28am (NZT) - spark Civil Defence warnings. There is no report of damage on the Islands at this stage.
Tsunami warnings for large parts of North Island coast have now been downgraded as the biggest waves have passed. That means anyone who had been evacuated can return home as of 1.30pm
A Beach and Marine threat is now in place for people in areas that had been evacuated. It means people should still stay away from the beach and shore areas as strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges are still expected. ....

The Ministry of Interior, represented by the General Directorate of Civil Defence, celebrated the World Civil Defence Day, that falls on March 1 of each year. The celebration of this event aims to emphasise the efforts of the civil defense personnel in protecting property and lives, strengthening the means of prevention the foundations of public safety and its reflection on the national economy.
